In the latest edition of our ‘Spotlight on Langham Hall’ series, we are pleased to introduce Ryan Paterson, Manager in our Jersey funds team. Ryan has been with Langham Hall for more than six years, building his career from a non-finance background into a leadership role where he supports clients throughout the full life cycle of their funds.
We spoke with Ryan about his journey, the support that shaped his development and the advice he would give to those starting out in the industry.
What is the best piece of advice you have received in your career so far?
It is difficult to pinpoint just one piece of advice, but the continuous attention and guidance my line manager has given me since the day one has been instrumental in getting me to where I am today. Combined with Langham Hall’s apprenticeship model, which provided valuable hands-on experience and ongoing support, I have been able to develop my skills and grow confidently within my role.
What is your professional background?
Prior to joining Langham Hall, I had no experience in the finance industry. After completing a degree in product design, I returned to Jersey and spent the summer working as a surf instructor. By the end of that summer, I joined Langham Hall. Although I lacked a finance background, the transferable skills I had gained at university and in previous roles proved valuable. Since then, I have completed both the CLTI Certificate and the Advanced Certificate in Fund Administration, building a strong foundation in fund structures, regulatory requirements and the practical skills needed to support clients effectively.
What is your favourite part about your role?
I enjoy being involved in the full life cycle of a fund – from the initial fund set up, KYC and investor onboarding, to investment meetings and watching the investments develop over time. I also value my team. Everyone shares expertise and supports one another, creating a positive and collaborative environment where we all learn and grow.
What advice would you give someone starting their career in the Private Funds sector?
Be attentive and listen carefully to those around you; there is so much to learn from experienced colleagues. Stay curious, ask questions and take time to understand the work. With persistence and a willingness to learn, your hard work won’t go unnoticed.
What do you like to do as a hobby/in your free time?
Most of my free time is taken up with swimming, cycling and running. I enjoy the training, but mostly I love being outdoors and taking in all that nature has to offer.
