ESG: Understanding its role for alternative assets

24th March 2021

The last 12 months have seen a rapid gain in traction for ESG, in both politics and financial services. The first half of 2020 saw a record-breaking $21 billion invested in ESG funds, while in 2021 the world’s largest economy, the US, re-joined the Paris Agreement against a backdrop of an increased global focus on climate change. Such events are increasingly bringing ESG to the forefront of debates on the future of financial services, and regulators and investors alike are taking note.

With this ever changing landscape affecting fund managers globally, Langham Hall is delighted to release our 2021 report; “ESG: Understanding its role for alternative assets.” This report seeks to assist fund managers when thinking about their ESG strategy, as well as providing them with a toolkit to comply with the newly introduced Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (‘SFDR’) in Europe.

For alternative assets, the implications of ESG on the fund life cycle are becoming key to manager’s decision making. This report will analyse how ESG can be integrated into the fund management process, and includes;

  • Fundraising: How do institutional investors view ESG, and what can managers do to ensure their ESG proposition is attractive during the fundraising process?
  • Portfolio Considerations: What is ESG, and how is it measured? What can managers do to minimise their ESG risks whilst promoting their ESG credentials?
  • Regulations: The Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation came into force in Europe on March 10th 2021, who is affected and what do managers need to do?
  • Fund Manager Q&A: In our Q&A session with Manish Sarwal, Impax Asset Management and William Kyle, PfP Capital, we discuss how ESG has become an integral part of their day to day operations throughout the fund lifecycle.

We hope you enjoy reading the report, and we welcome any questions you may have.
